The Council no longer provides this service directly.

In April 2009 tenants voted for Stock Transfer from Merthyr Tydfil CBC to Merthyr Valleys Homes (MVH). Therefore, the Council does not provide this service directly anymore as all Social Rented Housing Stock in Merthyr Tydfil is owned by the four Housing Associations that are listed below.

Merthyr Valley Homes

MVH is a new not-for-profit registered social landlord, which the Council has helped to establish.

MVH are implementing a programme of improvements, which the Council couldn’t afford due to restrictions placed upon local authorities in the way they can access funding. Around £69 million will be spent in the next 4 years to make improvements to tenants’ homes – this is around £29 million more than the Council could afford over the same period.

MVH are registered and regulated by the Welsh Assembly Government, who can take action if guarantees specified in the Offer Document and standards are not being met. It has also entered into a legally binding contract with the Council.
Importantly, tenants will have a real say in how MVH is run. It is managed by a board of 12 people, 4 of who are tenants, working alongside 4 Council nominees and 4 independent people.

All tenants can apply to become members of MVH, with voting at annual general meetings.
