Each year Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council organises festive Christmas lights and decorations for the Town Centre. 

The lights are switched on by the Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil with the help of Father Christmas; with even the occasional celebrity known to show up! 

During the lighting ceremony a funfair, children’s entertainers and music is located on the forecourt of the Civic Centre to keep the crowds entertained. 

In 2010 a new, more cost-effective LED lighting system was installed, to save money and be more environmentally friendly.
