We are responsible for the maintenance of the County Borough’s highway structures which includes bridges, culverts, subways and retaining walls.

The bridge maintenance section has overall responsibility for 63 highway structures and numerous retaining walls that are owned by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. However, not all bridges in Merthyr Tydfil are owned by the council. Those on the trunk roads, for example, are maintained by the South Wales Trunk Road Agency on behalf of the Welsh Government. The majority of bridges over railways are maintained by Network Rail.

We make regular general inspections of the 63 highway structures every two years to ensure that they are safe and fit for purpose. Using the results of the inspections, we prioritise, plan and carry out repairs to the structures.
