Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is inviting all citizens to help shape the future for public services in Merthyr Tydfil, through the consultation on the Community Strategy that was launched on 17th December 2009.

The Community Strategy was first published in 2004 by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council set out a vision that people across the County Borough aspired to, and set out objectives under seven themes.

The vision was:

By 2020, to create a community in which all people of all ages can enjoy living and working safely and healthily, and pursue opportunities to develop themselves and their families in a clean and attractive environment.

Merthyr Tydfil has developed significantly since 2004 in many areas, and consequently, so have the ambitions of the residents. It is for this reason that we are consulting you on what your vision for 2020 is and what are the key things you want to see in place so that this a place to be proud of where:

• People want to live
• People want to move into
• People want to visit
• People can grow in work education in fulfilling life.

To help focus your thoughts and give a structure to the Strategy we are asking you to look at four themes and set out under those what your Merthyr Tydfil should aim to deliver by 2020.

The four themes are:

• A healthy safe and fair society

• A prosperous, cultural and diverse Merthyr Tydfil

• A sustainable living environment

• Learning for Life

Upon completion of the consultation, the findings will be analysed and used to shape the next ten years objectives for all public bodies, the third sector and partnerships in Merthyr Tydfil and beyond.

The Local Service Board (LSB) will use the Strategy to set its future agenda and help ensure that there is effective delivery and performance management to deliver the Merthyr Tydfil 2020 that people want.

The Leader of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, Councillor Jeff Edwards, said:

“This review of the Community Strategy comes at an exciting and challenging time, and I am keen that the people in the County Borough help inform and shape this important strategic document which will be the overarching one for the Council, the Health Board, the Police and Third Sector, and all the partnerships that deliver for us in Merthyr Tydfil. Please make sure you let us have your views.”

So where do you want to take Merthyr Tydfil in future? Let's set out ambitions that stretch us, and through working together, enables us to achieve our goals.
