A social enterprise is “a business with primarily social objectives, whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profits for shareholders”. (Source: DTI & WAG, 2009)

The South East Wales Community Economic Development Programme (SEWCED)

A European and Welsh Government Financial Investment of Capital and Revenue combined with Business Developmental Support to kick-start the trading, growth and sustainability opportunities of third sector organisations to contribute to the wealth creation of the local economy and build viable and vibrant communities.

A combined Capital and Revenue Investment of over £2m was allocated Merthyr Tydfil CBC from November 2010 to August 2015 to give third sector organisations the boost to start the commercial journey of building their trading activities.

The Programme achieved the following:

• 30 Job Created, equivalent of 21.5 Full Time Posts
• 3 New Social Enterprise Created
• 5 Organisations Assisted
• 28 Organisation Financially Support
• 15 Organisations Adopting and Implementing Environmental Action Plans
• 13 Organisations Adopting and Improving Equality Strategies and Monitoring Systems
