Question

Please can you tell me the number of households within your council who as at or around 1st January 2020:- 1. Are receiving Council Tax Discount SMI Disregard. And of them:- 2. How many have been backdated to the date the GP certified they were suffering from Severe Mental Impairment (SMI).

Answer

1. 235 2. Of the 235 reductions currently being awarded we are unable to establish a precise figure of how many were backdated to the date that the GP indicated, because some have been in place for many years, moved address, etc. However, the process of awarding an SMI reduction, has always been that we examine all applications that are received for the date the GP indicated that a condition exists which would exempt the applicant from Council Tax, as well as the entitlement to the relevant benefit and also the household composition and if it is appropriate we would award a Disregard / Exemption and backdate it for a maximum period of 6 years from the date of the application.
