Please confirm whether your authority’s school catering service (or its contractors): • (a) Specify Red Tractor, RSPCA Assured, or equivalent assurance schemes for chicken procurement. • (b) Collect or record any data on the country of origin of chicken purchased. • (c) Comply with the necessary EU regulations as per all meat If available, please attach or link to any relevant policy or procurement documentation that specifies origin requirements for meat and poultry.
Answer
a) Specify Red Tractor, RSPCA Assured, or equivalent assurance schemes for chicken procurement. The Council’s school catering service doesn’t source any poultry from the UK. EU sourced poultry complies with the relevant European Animal Welfare and Slaughter regulations (Council Regulation (EC) No. 1099/2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing). Manufacturers who source poultry from outside the EU also ensure practices align with relevant EU welfare legislation and use suppliers that have globally recognised animal welfare assurance scheme certification such as LRQA Farm First, NSF Global Animal Wellness Certificate as well as ensuring compliance with European Chicken Commitment (ECC) and Better Chicken Commitment (BCC). b) Collect or record any data on the country of origin of chicken purchased. The country of origin is detailed on the product specifications made available via Erudus, an online portal suppliers upload their product information to and which the Council can access. In addition, for fresh raw meat products, the country of origin will be included on the label, in line with labelling regulations. c) Comply with the necessary EU regulations as per all meat The meat products that we source from manufacturers complies with the relevant EU regulations. d) If available, please attach or link to any relevant policy or procurement documentation that specifies origin requirements for meat and poultry.
