After working with the community as part of the pre-consultation process, it was approved by Council that the two locations that would be put forward for public consultation would be the former Vaynor and Penderyn High School and Godre’r Coed Playing Field.
The consultation period will run for 12 weeks from today Monday, 12th June to Monday 4th September with consultation events and drop-in sessions being held at various locations across the County Borough. Information on these events can be found in the Consultation Document below. In addition to the consultation events, two live social media sessions will take place where there will be an opportunity for you to ask questions on-line on the individual sites.
“The Council’s aim is to build a new school, which is a suitable size and of sustainable construction to allow the school community to thrive and develop and serve the needs of pupils in the community now and in the future,” said Gareth Chapman the Council’s Chief Executive.
The 21st Century Schools and Education Programme is a £1.4 billion investment programme over a five year period ending 2018/19. Local authorities were asked to submit bids for the refurbishment and rebuild of schools, with the Welsh Government providing 50% funding and the remaining 50% provided by the Council.
The new Ysgol Y Graig building will be a ‘one-form entry’ school - replacing the current primary and nursery school buildings - for 193 primary and 30 nursery pupils.
The two potential sites were chosen based on factors including sufficient and appropriate outdoor space, safe vehicle access, pedestrian routes and off road parking for safe drop off and pick up.
“We’re holding an exhaustive consultation process because we wanted everyone to have a clear understanding of the potential solutions, to ensure that together we make the right decisions when developing this new learning facility for our young people.” said Gareth Chapman.
The two main consultation events will be held on the 5th July at Ysgol Y Graig Primary School from 9am- 12 noon, and at Cefn Social Club on 20th July from 3pm–7pm. Consultation drop-in sessions will also take place in the foyer of the Civic Centre offices on 20th June, 11 am – 3 pm and at Tesco in the town centre on 6 July from 11am-3pm.
The live social media sessions are being held on Monday 19th June from 5.30–7pm and on 21st August from 5.30-7pm.
