The Council has been thanked for its ongoing support for a Merthyr Tydfil advice service that helped 159 former Triumph staff who lost their jobs when the factory closed suddenly in 2019.

Citizens Advice Merthyr Tydfil immediately set up evening surgeries at its Post Office Lane premises dedicated to helping the workers, and this week it was announced they had been successful with their lost wages claim.

The 159 clients named on the application have each been awarded 90 days’ pay.  As the employer is insolvent, the money will be paid by the Insolvency Service, with the £525 per week amounting to a total £367,134.

Citizens Advice Merthyr Tydfil Chief Executive Lisa Howell-Morgan said: “The County Borough Council continues to invest financial support in Citizens Advice MT with our Service Level Agreement - core funding which enables us to deliver vital help and support to the Merthyr Tydfil community.

“This is a great result for the Triumph workers and staff at Citizens Advice and a prime example of how investment from the local authority benefits local vulnerable situations.”

Council Leader Cllr Lisa Mytton described the decision as ‘fantastic news’. She added: “We look hard at the range of organisations to which we award core funding, and there is never any hesitation in continuing the relationship we have with Citizens’ Advice.

“This result shows how the Council’s investment in services really does help our community, especially in times of need, and I congratulate Lisa and her staff – as well as the former Triumph workers.”
