Merthyr Tydfil Covid-19 cases among lowest in Wales

Merthyr Tydfil has seen a dramatic fall in the number of new cases of Covid-19 over the past six weeks.

The figures continue to be very low - over the past seven days, just eight new cases have been recorded in total, making us one of only five local authority areas in Wales to record single figures.  On some days, there have been none at all.

Today’s Daily Epidemiological Summary Report from Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board also shows that the number of cases per 100,000 people fell from 145 on 14 March to 13.3 on April 12, below the Welsh average of 17.4.

The County Borough Council’s Deputy Chief Executive Alyn Owen said: “It’s great news that so much progress has been made since late 2020, when we had the highest figures in the UK.  As recently as early March, the rate per 100,000 was 169.

“We are very grateful to all our residents who are continuing to follow the restrictions after a very long and frustrating year of limited freedom, and to those who are having tests and vaccinations,” he added.

“To that end, we couldn’t have got to this stage without the support of all the agencies involved in administering the testing and vaccinations, and helping to bring the figures down.

“We are not out of the woods yet and we know from experience how quickly things can change so we urge people to keep sticking to the rules and get tested at our mobile centres - but these are very encouraging statistics!”
