Work on new Merthyr Tydfil bus station about to start

Work is about to begin on Merthyr Tydfil’s new multimillion-pound town centre bus station, the County Borough Council has announced.

Construction is due to start on the former police station site in Swan Street on July 15, with an expected completion date of autumn 2020. The current station just off Castle Street will continue to operate until then.

“We’re delighted that after years of planning, the contractor will finally be on site and work will start in just a couple of weeks,” said Council Leader Cllr Kevin O’Neill.

The contractor appointed is construction and regeneration firm Morgan Sindall, which has a proven track record of delivering complex projects on time and within budget.

The company has been involved in an extensive range of building schemes in Wales in recent years, including the £44m Tonyrefail Community School, the £30m Loftus Garden Village in Newport and the currently in construction £7m Six Bells Primary School in Abertillery.

The project has been co-designed with the Cardiff Capital Regional Transport Authority and the Council will retain the professional services of Capita to support the management of the construction contract.

As part of the contract, Morgan Sindall will be holding a ‘Meet the Buyer’ event, offering supply chain opportunities to local businesses.

The new bus station will be located closer to the town’s railway station creating a modern, high quality transport interchange facility. It will also allow exciting new development opportunities to be considered for the current bus station site.

“Once again, we’re grateful to Welsh Government for providing £10m funding for the development, which will complement its significant investment in the Core Valley Lines Rail Network,” said Cllr O’Neill.

“We’re confident that our residents will be delighted with this much-needed state-of-the art facility, which will also be a catalyst for the next stage of a major redevelopment plan for the future of the town centre.”
