The Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough for 2018/19 has been sworn in.  Councillor Clive Tovey, Ward Member for Gurnos and resident of Cefn Coed, is now the First Citizen of the County Borough for the second time after also serving a term of Office as Mayor in 2010/11.

Clive, who was born in Cwmbran and went to West Monmouth School in Pontypool, initially did a Degree in Pharmacy at Manchester University.  Clive had a desire to see the world, so in 1981 he went to Australia to work as a Pharmacist, then went on to study a Master's Degree in Pharmacy at Queensland University.  He subsequently studied medicine and after qualifying as a doctor in January 1989, left Surfer's Paradise and started work a few days later in Prince Charles Hospital (PCH).

Clive has been an A&E Consultant in PCH for the past 18 years.

Clive’s Political career started in 2004 when he was elected as a Councillor for the Vaynor Ward and he is only the third Councillor in the history of Merthyr Tydfil to be elected in to the position of Mayor for a second time.  Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Lisa Mytton, said: “I’ve never known any of us, and I speak as a former Mayor myself, to embrace the role quite as much as Clive. So much so, he’s doing it twice!”

This year Clive is supporting two charities; Macmillan Cancer Support Merthyr Tydfil Branch and St John Ambulance, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Area.  During his time as Mayor in 2010/11 Clive raised over £17,000 for The Alzheimer’s Society, and hopes to raise even more this year!

We wish Clive a very successful Mayoral year.

Deputy Mayor for 2018/19 is Councillor Howard Barrett, Ward Councillor for Vaynor and former Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services.
