Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is keen to correct the impression that might have been given by recent media coverage of its town centre footfall monitors.
The Council’s Regeneration and Public Protection Scrutiny Committee were last week told about a method used to discover approximate visitor numbers to the town centre. A programme called GEO-Sense is used which is as a modern-day footfall counter. GEO-Sense works by detecting mobile phone Media Access Control addresses from devices entering the town centre.
Contrary to the impression given in the media report, the aim of GEO-Sense is solely to measure the affect that special events and occasions have on shopper numbers.
