Secondary school admissions

If your child 12th birthday falls between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020 you must apply for a transfer from primary Year 6 to Secondary School Year 7. A leaflet was sent to you advising you of the process.

Parents are required by law to express a preference for the school they wish their child to attend even if they are attending the feeder primary school.

Information for Parents

The entry of children into primary schools is controlled and administered by an 'Admissions Authority’ except for voluntary aided schools. For non-voluntary aided schools this is Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and for voluntary aided schools it’s the Governing body of the school.

Admissions to primary schools will normally be granted provided a schools admission number is not exceeded. Where the number of applications for admission to a school exceeds the number of places available, i.e. where an admission number has been reached, places will be allocated by applying the published oversubscription criteria.

Voluntary Aided Schools

There is 1 voluntary aided schools in Merthyr Tydfil. Each Voluntary Aided Schools Governing Body manages their own admissions and should be contacted directly.

Detailed information about school admissions can be found in A Guide to Policy and School Admission Arrangements 2019-2020 and the School Admissions Policy for 2019 -2020.

Please Note: Where parents knowingly give false information in order to obtain the advantage of a particular school for their child to which they would not otherwise be entitled, the council reserves the right to withdraw the offer of a place. Parents may render themselves guilty of an offence under Section 5(b) of the Perjury Act 1911.
