Residential and Nursing Care

Wherever possible we will provide support for you to remain at home, however the circumstances may arise where you or someone you support can no longer to remain at home. In order to determine which type of home you would need to make sure that they are able to meet your specific support needs an assessment will need to be undertaken

There will be a charge for any care home and how much you pay will depend on your personal circumstances. More information can be found in Paying for Care (Page is currently being updated).

In Merthyr there is a mixture of Local Authority Homes and Independent homes. Information regarding all the homes in the area can be found in DEWIS. Information about the residential homes provided by Merthyr Council can be found here: 

Local Authority Care Homes for Older People

The Authority has two registered residential care homes for older people. The homes provide both long term and short term residential care for up to a total of 32 individuals, both male and female, over the age of 65 years with or without dementia.

Ty Gurnos Newydd Care Home is a recently constructed purpose built care home which opened in December 2013. The accommodation is provided in 32 single rooms all of which have en suite toilet and shower facilities. All are decorated to a high standard and have fitted furniture.

Located in the Gurnos, the home is close to amenities such as bus routes, shops, post office and social club.

Llysfaen is a home for adults with learning difficulties situated within the village community of Cefn Coed, a short distance from Merthyr Tydfil town centre. There are various amenities available within the community, with a regular bus service to the town centre.

Llysfaen provides split-level accommodation, providing both long term and respite accommodation for up to 8 people. This can accommodate people with a learning disability who are younger adults, older persons, persons with a physical disability or mental health (functional).

The facilities for long-term care are separate from those of the respite unit.

The criterion for admission is a professional assessment.
