Young People Information and Advice
The Merthyr Tydfil Youth service has, as with all other departments of M.T.C.B.C, recently undertaken a restructure. The process involved a great deal of evaluation and consultation of service users, the general public and staff. In response, a number of changes were made to the structure of the youth service and the location of the services provided.
Perhaps the most notable change has been the closure of ‘Part-time’ centres in favour of ‘hubs’. This now means that, where previously there were several clubs throughout the borough, opening on one or two evenings a week, services are now more centralised within specific geographical locations. The hubs, are at Pen Y Dre (North), Georgetown (Town/mid) and the Willows (south) and Treharris boys and girls club (south). Services ranging from drop-in sessions, StreetGames, advice/guidance and evening sessions are available at all of the sites throughout the week (Further information can be gained by contacting the officer responsible for each hub/programme).
Other services such as the Street Based Youth Team, providing responsive services and support to young people throughout the borough, Monday-Saturday, responding to needs as identified by service users, working in partnership with other organisations including the South Wales Police Authority Communities First and the local health board.
Within the new structure the Youth service employability team offers responsive, flexible support to young people (aged 16-25) to improve employability skills/levels, providing support and guidance in the creation/updating of CV’s, job search skills, application form completion, mock interviews/interview technique feedback and accessing employment related training and qualifications. The team also works alongside Careers Wales, the ‘NEETS co-ordinator’ for the borough and other partners to track and support young people (16+) at risk of becoming NEET (not in employment, education, training).
With the importance of a preventative approach to young people becoming NEET in order that they may explore and enjoy active and fulfilling lives, the Merthyr Tydfil Youth Service is undertaking lead working across all services.
The role will support young people (pre and post 16) prior to and after leaving full time education identify further education/training and employment options, plan for future development and access requisite support tailored to their individual needs in order to maximise educational attainment and raise employability levels of individuals as identified by Careers Wales and the NEETS co-ordinator’.
The youth service also works in partnership with Canolfan Soar, a Welsh language youth provision for young people aged 11-25 – it caters to fluent welsh speaking young people and young people learning welsh.
The welsh provisions also provides lunch time clubs throughout the borough.
It provides off site activities, accredited programmes, youth forum, health workshops, physical activities, cultural activities and information sessions.
Partners include Canolfan Soar, Merthyr Tydfil Youth Service, Street Games, Cluster Board, Rhydywaun, Pen-y-dre, Cyfarthfa, Afon Taf and Bishop Hedley.
