Workplace recycling is changing

From 6 April 2024, it will become law for all businesses, charities and public sector organisations to sort their waste for recycling.

It also applies to all waste and recycling collectors and processors who manage household-like waste from workplaces.

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council provides a chargeable trade waste collection service for local businesses. Several different size containers are available to suit the amount of waste generated, these waste containers range in size from a 55 litre stackable box to an 1100 litre container.

Recycling in the workplace

The regulations around trade waste are changing in Wales. New legislation requires businesses to separate their waste and will come into force on the 6th April 2024.

Please remember it is your responsibility to recycle correctly at work. You must not place recycling in the general refuse bin and recycling must be placed in the correct recycling containers provided.

Businesses must present specified recyclable materials for collection separately from each other and separate from residual waste.

You must not place any recycling in the refuse bin. If there are recyclable materials in the bin on collection day that bin will then not be collected and it is the responsibility of the site to remove the recycling.

National Resources Wales (NRW) will be enforcing compliance with the forthcoming legislation and breaches are subject to fixed penalties and appropriate enforcement action.

If you would like further information or advice on how to recycle properly in your workplace please contact the Trade Waste Officer on 01685 725363 or at lisa.tomkins@merthyr.gov.uk or visit https://www.gov.wales/changes-workplace-recycling-guidance-workplaces and www.gov.wales/workplacerecycling for guidance.
