Business - Broadband Campaign
Residents and Businesses within the Borough of Merthyr Tydfil will be amongst the first in Wales to benefit from the pioneering multimillion pound programme Superfast Cymru, bringing nationwide fibre broadband to Wales.
Fibre broadband is the next generation of broadband - much faster, more reliable and it uses a different technology.
Whilst traditional broadband is delivered via copper telephone lines, fibre broadband uses fibre optic cable.
This will have the power to transform the life, work and play of citizens across the Borough of Merthyr Tydfil. What's more, Superfast broadband will boost the economy locally, enabling businesses to work more effectively in new ways and reach out to new customers.
Fibre is already available in some parts of Merthyr Tydfil, Bedlinog and Ynysowen telephone exchange areas, and roll out is continuing in these locations under the Superfast Cymru programme and by late Summer 2014 the majority of homes and businesses will be able to access fast fibre broadband. All four of the telephone exchanges which serve Merthyr Tydfil County Borough will be upgraded under the Superfast Cymru programme.
Areas of Merthyr Tydfil, Bedlinog and Ynysowen are the first communities in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough to be able to access this new service as a result of the programme. Other communities served off the Trelewis telephone exchange will follow during June 2014. Roll out of fibre will continue for several months and should be largely completed in Merthyr Tydfil Borough by March 2015. The Superfast -Cymru Programme will continue to run until 2016.
