Armed Forces Covenant Due Regard Duty

The Armed Forces Covenant Duty is a legal obligation on certain public bodies to pay due regard to the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant when exercising specific functions.

It requires organisations to consciously consider the unique responsibilities and sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces community, aiming to address potential disadvantages they may face when accessing local services.

If you represent a public body and would like to arrange Armed Forces Covenant Awareness sessions customised for your organisation, please get in touch with your local Armed Forces Liaison officer will be happy to assist you:  Tel: 07747485619 (Monday to Friday 8:30am to 17:00pm)

What is the Armed Forces Covenant

The Armed Forces Covenant is a commitment by the UK government to ensure that members of the Armed Forces community (including veterans, serving personnel, and their families) are treated fairly and not disadvantaged because of their service. It aims to provide support in areas such as housing, healthcare, and education. Public bodies have a legal obligation to pay due regard to the principles of the Covenant when exercising specific functions.

The key principles of the Armed Forces Covenant include:

No Disadvantage: Ensuring that members of the Armed Forces community are not disadvantaged due to their service.

Special Consideration: Recognising the unique circumstances faced by service personnel, veterans, and their families.

Access to Services: Providing fair access to healthcare, housing, education, and employment opportunities.

Support and Recognition: Offering support for veterans and promoting public awareness of their contributions.

The Armed Forces Covenant covers various services, including:

Healthcare: Ensuring access to medical services for veterans and their families.

Housing: Providing support with housing needs.

Education: Facilitating educational opportunities for service personnel and their children.

The Armed Forces Covenant is essential because it ensures that members of the Armed Forces community—such as veterans, serving personnel, and their families—are treated fairly and not disadvantaged due to their service. It promotes access to services like healthcare, housing, education, and employment opportunities. By recognising their sacrifices and unique circumstances, the Covenant aims to create a more supportive environment for those who serve or have served in the military.
