What is the Armed Forces Covenant?
The Armed Forces Covenant is a solemn promise from the nation—a commitment—that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, along with their families, will be treated fairly. It recognises the profound rewards of service, including a life filled with challenge, adventure, and the opportunity to acquire new skills while developing resilience. Serving also provides the chance to travel the world while safeguarding and defending one’s country.
However, an Armed Forces career is far from easy. Service members fulfil numerous obligations and make significant sacrifices to carry out their duties and ensure our collective safety. The stresses and pressures of the job can leave a lasting impact, even after they transition back to civilian life.
Members of the Armed Forces and their families often lead lives that diverge from what might be considered “normal.” Their experiences when accessing day-to-day public and private services in the UK differ from those of the general population. Whether due to unfamiliarity with civilian life or frequent relocations across the country, accessing goods and services can be challenging for Armed Forces personnel.
This is precisely why we have the Armed Forces Covenant. It represents a promise by the nation—a commitment—that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, along with their families, should be treated fairly. It ensures they are not disadvantaged because of their service. Moreover, the Covenant recognises the sacrifices they make on our behalf and underscores the responsibilities we owe them in return.
Merthyr Tydfil Council Commitment to the Armed Forces Community
Merthyr Tydfil CBC has a rich history of honouring and appreciating its armed services, both past and present. The Armed Forces Covenant exemplifies this commitment, aligning seamlessly with the Council’s and the County Borough’s objectives to support our dedicated Armed Forces Community.
The Council are proud to have to have signed The Covenant that serves as a voluntary declaration of mutual support between the civilian community of Rhondda Cynon Taf and the Armed Forces Community residing within the County Borough. It symbolises the dual respect shared among the Council, its partner agencies, local communities, and our esteemed Armed Forces Personnel—both those currently serving and those who have retired—along with their families.
