1. We are fully dedicated and compliant with our legal duties under the Equality Act 2010, including the Public Sector Equality Duty, all of which are mandated by Welsh Government and the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Schools are aligned to the Council’s Strategic Equality Plan and its equality vision. MTCBC’s SEP 2020-2024 can be found on the corporate website Welcome to MERTHYR.GOV.UK | Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council There is also specific guidance in place for schools on anti-bullying and inclusion areas.
2. Welsh Government’s Race Equality Action Plan is soon to be published and education is a core theme. We will be fully committed to implementing the theme within all school provisions in the borough and at the forefront of supporting racial equality in primary and secondary education in terms of workforce, student’s experiences of racism in schools, and student outcomes. Schools have had access to a range of training including Bulliesout (with workshops also included in the Student Conference), Show Racism the Red Card and Hate Crime training. This work is then reinforced at the annual Student Conference, held during Anti-bullying week. The main focus of Conferences has been on wellbeing and has covered such topics as domestic abuse, equality, respect and tolerance, racism and anti-bullying to enable pupils to make informed choices.
3. Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is committed to equality and supporting people covered by protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. We are awaiting The Welsh Governments Race Equality Action Plan, when received, we intend to review the resources being produced by the consortia and WJEC to support schools. As mentioned above, schools have accessed a range of training including Bulliesout, Show Racism the Red Card and Hate Crime training.
