Question
I am seeking information about the local welfare assistance schemes provided in your area for local people when they are in financial hardship. Could you let me know if your council provides any sort of scheme of this kind (and details of those schemes if Yes), or if all local assistance is provided through the Discretionary Assistance Fund for Wales through the Welsh Government? http://gov.wales/topics/people-and-communities/communities/debt/discretionary-assistance-fund/?lang=en If the answer is the Discretionary Assistance Fund, are people in need referred directly to the fund if they approach the council, or is the council able to help people apply?
Answer
1. Local assistance is provided through the Discretionary Assistance Fund for Wales through Welsh Government. http://gov.wales/topics/people-and-communities/communities/debt/discretionary-assistance-fund/?lang=en 2. If an individual approached the Council they would signposted/advised where to apply for assistance i.e. the Discretionary Assistance Fund. However if an individual has specific support needs and would not appear to be able to make an application themselves then there are support workers based in the Local Authority who would be able to make an application on their behalf. E.g.: our Gofal (mental health support worker) or our Macmillan cancer support worker.
