Protect your own birds and others, register as a bird owner, it is now a legal requirement. Even if you only have one or a few pet birds you must register. Only birds which are housed all year round and never go outside are exempt.

Once registered you will get updates on any outbreak and advice on keeping your birds safe, and you’ll help prevent the spread of disease and protect all kept birds, including back-yard flocks

You can register online and find more information at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/register-as-a-keeper-of-less-than-50-poultry-or-other-captive-birds

Avian Influenza / Bird Flu is on the increase again this winter. Merthyr Tydfil has already had one dead wild bird reported to the authorities which after being tested was found to be positive for High Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1.

Wild birds can spread the disease to your birds. Avian influenza is of serious concern, not only for animal health and welfare, but also to the sustainability of food production and public health.

Due to a significant increase of avian influenza in kept and wild birds in Wales, from 13th November mandatory housing measures now apply to all keepers of 50 or more birds and all keepers who sell or give away eggs or poultry products (even if they keep fewer than 50 birds).

For now, others not included above, the current requirements are to practice good bio-security, clean and if possible disinfect boots, feeding equipment etc, Do not feed or water your birds where wild birds can access. Use netting for example to keep wild birds away. For more information and details visit:

Contact your local Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) office immediately on 0300 303 8268 if you suspect avian influenza, whether in your own birds or dead wild birds. APHA vets will investigate suspected cases.
