The Royal Mint recently played host to the South East Wales Tourism Awards, a celebration of the outstanding contributions made by local tourism businesses. With Merthyr Tydfil at the heart of these achievements, the event highlighted the growing importance of tourism to the region’s economy and applauded the innovation, dedication, and inclusivity demonstrated by its enterprises.
Tourism is a vital pillar of Merthyr Tydfil's economy, generating a remarkable £130.19 million in economic impact in 2022 and supporting 1,171 full-time equivalent jobs, according to the latest STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor) data. This success story underscores the area's position as a must-visit destination for both adventure seekers and those seeking unique cultural and natural experiences.
Councillor Jamie Scriven, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, commented:
"Tourism in Merthyr Tydfil is not only a cornerstone of our economy but also a reflection of the rich heritage, natural beauty, and world-class attractions we have to offer. These awards shine a spotlight on the incredible people and businesses driving this sector forward, and we are immensely proud of their achievements."
