Siarter Iaith is a Welsh Government initiative that encourages schools to promote the use of Welsh language, improving skills and inspiring children to use Welsh in all aspects of their lives.
The Charter provides a framework for schools to follow in order to achieve the award at three possible levels; Bronze, Silver or Gold.
Everyone at Coed-y-Dderwen Primary School worked together as a team; teachers, support staff, governors, and pupils, to smash the targets set for the Silver Award.
The Central South Consortium conducted an assessment and presented the school with Silver, making history by becoming the first English Medium Primary School in Merthyr to achieve this prestigious award.
Mrs Sarah Townsin, Headteacher, said:
“I am extremely proud of our whole school community in achieving the Siarter Iaith Silver Award.
Our well established Criw Cymraeg led the assessment day and were quoted as being ‘inspirational’ and a key driver in raising standards of Welsh in Coed-Y-Dderwen. Work has already started on our Gold Award journey!
We aim to inspire the children of Coed-Y-Dderwen to use Welsh in all aspects of their lives with confidence, enjoyment and in the wider community. Welsh is high on our school improvement priorities and this award celebrates the progress we have made so far. As a school community, we are delighted.”
