Councils thank emergency workers responding to wildfires

Council leaders have thanked firefighters, council workers and partner organisations working to protect communities from wildfires across Wales in recent days. 

Crews and local authority staff have been working alongside emergency services and other partners in challenging conditions to contain fires, support affected communities and keep people safe. 

Councils and fire and rescue authorities have also provided mutual aid across local boundaries, helping to ensure resources and support reach the areas where they are most needed. 

Councillor Anthony Hunt, Leader of the Welsh Local Government Association, said: 

“Our thoughts are with everyone directly affected by wildfires across Wales. The response to the onset of so many fires has been a huge team effort. On behalf of councils across Wales, I want to thank our fire and rescue services, council workers, farmers and everyone else who has worked tirelessly to protect people, homes and our countryside.  

“These have been difficult and dangerous conditions. The professionalism and determination shown by everyone involved have been extraordinary, as has the patience and cooperation of affected communities.  

“The risk has not passed, so please continue to take extra care and follow advice from the emergency services and your local council.”  

“Please do not light fires in the countryside, use disposable barbecues, or discard cigarettes, matches or glass bottles.  

“If smoke is affecting your area, stay indoors where possible and keep windows and doors closed. People with respiratory conditions should keep any medication they need close at hand and seek medical advice if their symptoms worsen.  

“Please stay away from affected areas, respect road closures and never fly drones near an incident. Follow official council and emergency service channels for reliable local updates, and call 999 immediately if you see a wildfire.”
