Diwrnod Shwmae/Su’mae returns to Merthyr Tydfil

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is excited to announce the return of the much-loved annual Diwrnod Shwmae/Su’mae Day celebration on Saturday 12 October 2024, from 10am to 4pm at Penderyn Square.
This vibrant event, run jointly by the Local Authority and local Welsh language partners, has been getting bigger and better since October 2019. Its mission is to ignite a passion for the Welsh language, to inspire and encourage everyone to embrace basic phrases like "shwmae," "bore da," and "sut wyt ti."
Our talented students from Caedraw School, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Rhyd y Grug, Abercanaid Primary School, Dowlais Primary School, Gwaunfarren Primary School, Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Santes Tudful, Pen y Dre High School and Heolgerrig Primary School will join forces to showcase the youthful enthusiasm for the Welsh language. You can also watch Angharad Rhiannon’s Welsh musical performance at 2.25pm.
Explore an assortment of delightful products for sale, from unique Welsh gifts, books, mouthwatering cakes and much more. These are provided by companies passionate about the Welsh language, whether they are learners or those already engaging with the language.

"Diwrnod Shwmae is such an important event in our calendar, and I'm excited to see it grow year after year.
“It's all about promoting and raising awareness about the Welsh language in our County Borough, and I'm really proud of the hard work our key partners and supporters put in to make it happen.
“I'd love to see as many people as possible, of all ages, come along and join in the celebrations. It's a great opportunity to discover the power of bilingualism and learn more about the benefits of engaging with the Welsh language. Can't wait to see you there!”
