Shwmae Day 23

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is thrilled to announce the return of the much-anticipated annual Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae Day celebration on Saturday 14 October, 2023, from 10am to 4pm at the picturesque Cyfarthfa Park.

This vibrant event, run jointly by the Local Authority and local Welsh language partners, has been evolving since October 2019. Its mission is to ignite a passion for the Welsh language, to inspire and encourage everyone to embrace basic phrases like "shwmae," "bore da," and "sut wyt ti."

Learn Welsh Glamorgan will be on hand to offer advice, information, and engaging activities for adults eager to embark on a Welsh language learning journey. The Welsh Rugby Union will share how they integrate and celebrate the Welsh language in their organisation.

Our talented students from Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Santes Tudful, Rhyd y Grug, Ysgol y Graig, Troed y Rhiw, and Caedraw will join forces to showcase the youthful enthusiasm for the Welsh language. Watch Erin Edwards, a talented young person from Trelewis, dazzle the audience with Welsh musical performances.

Children can look forward to face painting and balloon modelling, and for our youngest attendees, the Welsh language company "Do Re Mi Canu" will captivate with a musical extravaganza. Meanwhile, Adult Learning Wales invites you to get crafty with a Welsh-themed tablecloth-making activity.

Explore an assortment of delightful products for sale, from unique gifts, Welsh greeting cards, books, mouthwatering cakes, to beautiful wax candles. These are provided by companies passionate about the Welsh language, whether they are learners or those already engaging with the language.

Welsh Language Champion, Councillor Michelle Symonds said,
"This is an essential event within the calendar to promote, raise awareness and enhance the use of the Welsh language throughout our County Borough.

“I’m proud of this ever-growing celebration and commend the hard work of key partners and supporters who work tirelessly to make it happen.

“I hope to see many residents of all ages come along and celebrate Diwrnod Shwmae with us, where they will have the chance to discover the power of bilingualism and explore the benefits of learning and engaging with the Welsh language.”

Don't miss out on this extraordinary celebration of Welsh culture and language. Bring your family and friends and let’s make this a day to remember.
