A record number of parks and green spaces across Wales have reached the high standards required to fly the coveted Green Flag.

Environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy today revealed the 315 sites that have received the internationally renowned Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award.

The four successful council run sites within our county borough are; Cyfarthfa Park, Thomastown Park, Taf Bargoed Park and Aberfan Cemetery, along with 16 green spaces achieving the Green Flag Community Award.

The flags will be flying in recognition of their environmental efforts, excellent visitor facilities, and community involvement.

Cllr David Jones, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Communities said;
“Attaining the Green Flag status, for another year running, truly demonstrates the hard work and effort that goes into maintaining these beautiful parks and green spaces, by the wonderful staff and volunteers involved. They should be extremely proud of themselves.

“As Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Communities, on behalf of the whole Council, I want to pass on our gratitude and congratulations to everyone involved.

“I would urge all residents, and those visiting our county borough this summer, to consider spending time at our award-winning green spaces and making the most of these beautiful nature spots.”

Now in its third decade, the Green Flag Award recognises well-managed parks and green spaces in 20 countries around the world.

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator for Keep Wales Tidy said:
“We’re thrilled to see 315 green spaces in Wales achieving the prestigious Green Flag status, which is testament to the dedication and hard work of hundreds of staff and volunteers.

“Quality green spaces play a vital role in the physical and mental well-being of people across Wales, and to be recognised as among the best in the world is a huge achievement - Congratulations!”
