Recently, a National Lottery Heritage Fund financed 70-foot mural was unveiled at the Treharris Boys & Girls Club. The mural celebrated local heritage and depicts community-nominated characters and stories. This event has been the “grand finale” of the club’s centenary celebrations.
Over the past 18 months, the centenary celebrations have brought the community together, through a series of events, film screenings, and workshops promoting and safeguarding local heritage. With over 1,000 photographs and memorabilia donated by the community, the club’s archive has grown into a rich collection that captures the essence of the area’s history. Highlights of the collection, including artwork from Young People involved in the project, will be on display in the exhibition, which is open until November 26th 2024.
Cllr Gareth Lewis, Cabinet Member for Education, commented: “I am thrilled to witness the successful completion of the Heritage Project. I believe it will serve as a valuable source of memories for our residents and a crucial reference for preserving our local history for future generations. My heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in making this project a reality.”
Fifty-seven Youth and Community Volunteers have dedicated more than 378 hours to making this project a success. The Young People’s achievements were recognised at the Academy of Success Awards in June 2024, with the project being awarded 'Innovative Project of the Year'.
Chris Hole Head of Prevention for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council added: “The work of the young people and the community of Treharris is a great example of how learning, in this example about our history and culture can be both educational and engaging and is what makes youth work distinct from other types of work with young people. All those involved young people, community and staff should rightly be very proud”.
