How to Spot a Rogue Trader at Your Door
- Categories : Press Release
- 28 Apr 2025

Have you ever answered the door to someone offering cut-price repairs or urgent work? While some tradespeople are legitimate, many rogue traders pressure homeowners into expensive, poor-quality work or even scams.
Warning Signs:
- Unsolicited visits: They knock without an appointment, often claiming they were “just passing by.”
- Pressure tactics: They create urgency, saying the work is critical and must be done immediately.
- Cash-only requests: They refuse bank transfers or receipts, making transactions difficult to trace.
- No paperwork: They avoid giving written estimates, contracts, or invoices.
- Unmarked vehicles and no contact details: Reliable businesses usually have branded vehicles and legitimate contact information.
- Too-good-to-be-true prices: Unrealistically low prices can indicate poor-quality work or a scam.
What to Do:
- Don’t agree to anything on the spot. Ask for time to think and research their credentials.
- Ask for ID and verify it. Genuine traders should have identification and be happy to show it.
- Check their company online. Look for genuine reviews and feedback from past customers.
- Seek a second opinion before agreeing to work. A trusted friend or family member can provide perspective.
- Contact a reputable local business instead of agreeing to doorstep offers.
If in doubt, say no! Your safety is more important. Report any suspicious behaviour to the authorities.
