UPDATE COUNCIL TAX LEADER

On Wednesday 26th February 2025, a report will go to a special Full Council meeting with a proposal to increase Council Tax in Merthyr Tydfil by 5.5% for the 2025/26 Financial Year.

Cllr Brent Carter, Leader of the Council, said: “Since our last budget update on 4th February, Cabinet Members have continued working with the Director of Finance and other Council Officers on the Budget and Council Tax setting process, to ensure that any increase is kept to a minimum.

“During our budget consultation process we asked residents for their views on service priorities and Council Tax setting, during which 64% of people chose to maintain services, even if it means an increase in Council Tax. This was invaluable in helping us make an informed decision on where the proposal should be set.

“In our last update we estimated the increase could be up to 6% however, the proposal is now at 5.5%, meaning a Band A household would pay £1.40 extra per week, and a Band D household would pay £2.09 extra per week.

“All 30 elected members will have the opportunity to vote on this proposal at the special Full Council meeting next week.”
