The halls of Merthyr Tydfil rang out with the sounds of symphonic brilliance this May as 60 young musicians from across local schools and the Merthyr Tydfil Youth Orchestra experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — playing side-by-side with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW)!
Thanks to the vision of the National Music Plan and the tireless work of the Merthyr Tydfil Music Service, a group of BBC NOW musicians visited the area as part of their national schools and music services tour. The result? An unforgettable day of music, mentorship, and magic for learners across the region.
During school lessons and Youth Orchestra rehearsals, learners explored three thrilling pieces from the BBC Ten Pieces project — a ground-breaking initiative that introduces young people to the power and passion of classical music. After rehearsing with local music tutors, these budding instrumentalists were placed in sectionals with BBC NOW players, receiving expert coaching and playing advice from some of the UK’s finest orchestral musicians.
The session culminated in a full-orchestra rehearsal, with learners performing side-by-side with the BBC NOW professionals — for many, it was their first time in a full symphony orchestra. The energy was electric, and conductor Ellie Slorach led with inspiring enthusiasm — even inviting some of the young musicians to try their hand at conducting the orchestra themselves!
To cap off the extraordinary day, proud parents and carers were treated to a showcase performance. Learners performed their pieces with dazzling precision and confidence — a true testament to the hard work and passion ignited throughout the day. Audiences were also treated to performances by the BBC NOW musicians themselves, creating a moving, magical end to an unforgettable musical experience.
Sue Walker, Director of Education said: “This was more than just a workshop — it was a celebration of what music can do. Music builds confidence, lifts spirits, and brings people together. Watching these young people thrive and shine alongside such world-class musicians was incredibly special.”
A heartfelt thank you goes to the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Merthyr Tydfil Music Service, the Merthyr Tydfil Schools and the supportive families who made this day possible. But most of all, bravo to the talented young musicians of Merthyr Tydfil — who truly hit all the high notes.
