Merthyr Tydfil CBC named Winner of the Sustainability in Action Award

On 12 February 2026, the Council proudly scooped the Sustainability in Action Award, demonstrating their passionate commitment to a cleaner, greener future for our communities.

The Assessment Services Panel expressed; “Your submission demonstrated strong governance, accountability, and workforce engagement in embedding environmental responsibility across the organisation.

“The integrated approach spanning estates, transport, procurement, and staff culture reflects sustained commitment to environmental stewardship.

“The judges particularly valued the structured framework and recognised standards supporting your progress towards net zero.”

Following the implementation of the Decarbonisation Plan (23-30) and the Local Area Energy Plan, key environmental practices have become integrated into the Council. Additionally, initiatives to engage and educate staff around climate change impacts and striving to achieve net zero within their roles has gone from strength to strength.

Cabinet Member for Climate Change & Neighbourhoods, Cllr David Jones commented; “This is a fantastic achievement for the Council and demonstrates the commitment and engagement of staff throughout the authority to contribute to making Merthyr Tydfil a cleaner and greener place to live and work.
