Merthyr Tydfil foster carer urges others to consider fostering this Foster Care Fortnight

Foster carers are encouraging others to consider fostering a child and create lasting connections in Merthyr Tydfil.
Foster Care Fortnight, the biggest fostering awareness campaign, takes place between May 12 and May 25 this year, with this year’s theme celebrating the power of relationships.
Whether it’s the bond between a carer and a child, the relationship created with supportive social workers, or the friendships built with other foster carers in a community, strong relationships are the golden thread that run through all fostering stories.
In Wales, there are more than 7,000 children in care, but only 3,800 foster families. Foster Wales is aiming to recruit an additional 800 carers by 2026.
Foster carer Leanne shared their story of the lasting relationships they’ve formed as a result of fostering through Foster Wales Merthyr Tydfil.
“I have been a foster carer with Foster Wales Merthyr Tydfil for 5 years and in this time I have developed a fantastic relationship with my supervising social worker which has really helped me be the best foster carer I can be for all the children that I have looked after. Recently, the support I have had from my supervising social worker when going through a personal crisis was above and beyond expectations.”
Our Head of Children’s Services Jo Llewellyn said:
“It is absolutely great to hear from foster carers like Leanne about the positive experiences that they have had working within our team. The power of the relationship between a foster carer and their supervising social worker can not be underestimated and I am really proud of our team here at Foster Wales Merthyr Tydfil who work hard to make the most positive experiences for both our young people and foster carers.”
