Four secondary schools from across Merthyr Tydfil came together recently for a dynamic, full day SEREN debate competition that showcased the confidence, intellect, and teamwork of local pupils.

The SEREN Academy is a Welsh Government programme that supports the most able learners in Years 8–13 by widening their horizons, nurturing their academic passions, and helping them reach their full potential.

Teams from Afon Taf High School, Pen-Y-Dre High School, Cyfarthfa High School, and Blessed Carlo Acutis High School took part in a series of challenging debates on topics ranging from the impact of social media to political decision making and the future of healthcare.

Throughout the day, pupils demonstrated exceptional resilience, competence, and respect, engaging in thoughtful argumentation while supporting both their teammates and their opponents.

Special thanks are extended to the dedicated staff from all four participating schools, whose encouragement and preparation played a vital role in the success of the day.

Following an impressive performance at the Merthyr Tydfil SEREN debate competition, Cyfarthfa High School were crowned winners and progressed to the regional final against Rhondda Cynon Taff champions, Ysgol Llanhari.

This event was held at Pontypridd Museum, where once again learners demonstrated a very high standard of debating. They tackled complex and challenging topics, delivering thoughtful and mature responses throughout.

Cyfarthfa High emerged victorious and will now go on to represent the region at the national final in Oxford University on 19th March.

We wish the team the very best of luck and extend our thanks to both the pupils and their teacher, Miss M. Tippings, for being outstanding ambassadors for our county.

The SEREN debate competition continues to highlight the strength and potential of young people in Merthyr Tydfil, fostering a love of learning, leadership, and collaboration across the borough.
