We are excited to share the news about the third Noson Lawen, another great event in partnership with our schools across Merthyr Tydfil, which was held on the evening of Thursday 21st March 2024.
This incredible celebration of the Welsh Language and Culture is going from strength to strength. Noson Lawen was a culmination of the Cluster Eisteddfodau, which take place across our schools, and the audience were treated to an amazing showcase of Welsh language recitations, disco dancing, musical solo’s and some great choirs!
The language skills of the children shone through as they spoke and sang with great confidence, highlighting the benefits of learning the language and being bilingual. The sense of community permeated the hall of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, our fantastic community hosts!
The children from across the Pen Y Dre and Cyfarthfa Clusters, as well as children from Blessed Carlo Acutis, Ysgolion Gynradd Gymraeg Santes Tudfil and Rhyd y Grug, Cyfarthfa High School, Pen Y Dre High School and Afon Taf High School celebrated as one.
The audience were treated to an array of traditional Welsh songs and poetry, with our very own ‘Merthyr Forever’ song, written by Mrs Lynne Jones, at the forefront! Caedraw Primary School sang with great pride about the history and heritage of our Borough! The audience participated in songs such as, ‘Hei Mister Urdd’, ‘Calon Lan’ and of course our National Anthem, ‘Mae Hen Gwlad Fy Nhadau’. The strength of community and togetherness was clear, with our pride dazzling everyone!
We offer a special thanks to Mark, Ralph and the team at the Church, as well as to Mrs Sara Russell, a member of the Music Service team, who accompanied the young people beautifully on the piano. The College Welsh Ambassadors also did a fantastic job of organising our audience!
And of course - a big round of applause to all who participated!
We will continue to celebrate our area and the great benefits of our language.
We wish all those going on to the Urdd National Eisteddfod, flying their schools and Merthyr Tydfil’s flag, the very best of luck!
Cllr Geraint Thomas, Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Education commented, “We are thrilled to see Merthyr Tydfil’s talented pupils recognised in this years’ Noson Lawen celebrations.
“The event provided a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop their artistic talents, showcase their language skills, while creating great memories during a fun-filled evening.
“Da iawn and llongyfarchiadau to all the participating schools – you should be very proud.”
