Powerful Films Capture the Breadth of Support 'Shared Lives' Can Provide

This Shared Lives Week we’re pleased to share a series of powerful films from South East Wales Shared Lives, bringing real experiences to life, offering an honest and inspiring glimpse into what happens when people share their lives and homes. The videos feature people supported through Shared Lives, Shared Lives carers, and scheme workers, each reflecting on the impact Shared Lives has had on their lives.
Shared Lives schemes bring together people who need support with Shared Lives carers to share home, family and community life. Across Wales and the UK, Shared Lives continues to help people achieve greater independence, confidence and connection.

Gemma, a Shared Lives Worker highlights the importance of having the right support to build confidence and live life on your own terms. Shared Lives creates opportunities for people to pursue their goals while remaining connected to a supportive home environment.

Mikaela's story
Mikaela, a Shared Lives carer and Mum of three, shares her experiences of life with Shared Lives and the positive impact that personalised support can have on wellbeing, independence and everyday life. Her story is a reminder that the best outcomes are often achieved through genuine relationships and a strong sense of belonging.

Paul and Richard's story
“We’ve become a family.”
Paul and Richard, twins supported by Shared Lives carer Tina, talk about sadly losing their family carer during the pandemic, and the transition into Shared Lives. Present day, their mental and physical health is better. Their story reflects the mutual trust, friendship and shared experiences that are at the heart of Shared Lives.

Rama, Rajia and Rizwana's story
This moving film celebrates family and community. Rama and Rajia are neighbours, and both open up their homes to support people. They share their experiences of Shared Lives and the way it creates opportunities for people to thrive while maintaining the connections that matter most to them.

Steve and Steven's story

Steve, a Shared Lives carer and Steven, the person he supports, demonstrate how Shared Lives is built on everyday relationships and shared experiences. Their story highlights the value of companionship, trust and encouragement in helping people achieve their ambitions and enjoy life to the fullest.

Caroline's story
Caroline, a Shared Lives carer and previous foster carer offers a personal perspective on the difference that Shared Lives can make. She supported Alicia as a foster carer from the age of 6, and together they’ve transitioned to Shared Lives now Alicia is an adult. Their experiences show the confidence, security and opportunities that can grow from having the right support around you.

Nikita – Shared Lives for people living with mental ill health

Nikita's story reflects the transformative power of being valued, included and supported as an individual going through recovery from mental ill health. Her journey demonstrates how Shared Lives support people to re-build the life they want following a mental health crisis.
