A group of local schools has joined forces to launch an exciting new initiative called "5 Ways to Health and Well-Being," designed to equip students with the knowledge they need to thrive, both mentally and physically.

The Health and Well-being leads from each school worked to create the shared vision, ‘Every step we take, a healthier life we make’, which gave rise to the “5 Ways to Health and Well-Being” initiative.

This Community Focused School’s (CFS) initiative breaks down healthy habits into five simple, yet powerful, categories: eat well, drink well, move well, sleep well, and wash well. While these five pillars provide a clear framework, they're broad enough to cover a wide range of healthy practices, giving each school in the cluster a fantastic starting point to tailor the framework to their students.

Cllr Gareth Lewis, Cabinet Member for Education, is thrilled about the initiative's potential. He commented: "We're incredibly excited to see our schools embracing this proactive approach to student health. By giving our pupils a clear, structured way to understand and practice healthy habits, we're setting them up for a brighter, healthier future. It’s about empowering them with knowledge that will benefit them for years to come."

To really get the ball rolling, all schools involved were encouraged to integrate the "5 Ways to Health and Well-Being" into their Health Promoting Schools ‘Community of Practice’ action plans and to launch the initiative in their schools. And what better way to get students excited than a bit of friendly competition? A poster design contest was held, inviting students to visually represent the "5 Ways." Some primary schools within the cluster rose to the challenge.

To celebrate their efforts and support the initiative, CFS generously delivered a hamper packed with goodies to each participating school. These hampers were thoughtfully curated to include items that directly support each of the "5 Ways," making healthy choices even more accessible and fun for the students.

This project is a true multi-agency collaboration, with CFS spearheading the creation of engaging video content, presented by primary school pupils, to share these vital messages. Five short videos, each focusing on one of the "5 Ways," will be shared on CFS and school social media channels. Additionally, a longer, amalgamated video will be shared across CFS social media and distributed throughout the borough, significantly expanding the reach of this important initiative.

The success of the filming day was a testament to this collaborative spirit, with valuable support received from multiple agencies to ensure that accurate, clear, and consistent messaging is being shared. Those pupils who attended the filming day returned to their school and disseminated the information to their peers, further enhancing the impact of the project.

This project goes beyond just the school and is a real collaborative piece, highlighting the commitment of local schools and the community to fostering a culture of wellness among young people. By making health education engaging and actionable, the "5 Ways to Health and Well-Being" initiative is poised to make a real difference in the lives of students.
