A total of 220 talented young performers from across South Wales, representing the South-East Wales Youth Orchestra and Choir, took to the stage at London’s world-renowned Royal Albert Hall as part of the prestigious Music for Youth Proms.
Among the performers were pupils from Blessed Carlo Acutis School in Merthyr Tydfil, who joined forces with young musicians from ten local authorities (Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan, Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire, Torfaen, Caerphilly, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and Bridgend) to deliver a vibrant and memorable evening of youth music.
Sue Walker, Director for Education remarked: “Celebrating our young people performing at the Royal Albert Hall is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we invest in creativity and collaboration. Music education opens doors—not just to artistic expression, but to confidence, teamwork, and lifelong learning. This event showcases the incredible talent across South Wales and the strength of our regional partnerships in nurturing it."
The programme featured four newly commissioned works, including two BBC Ten Pieces compositions that culminated in a breathtaking finale involving over 1,200 musicians. Additionally, the event showcased two original collaborations with emerging singer-songwriters and bands through Music for Youth’s ‘Frequencies’ initiative.
This performance forms part of a wider commitment under the National Plan for Music Education, which aims to strengthen regional partnerships and enhance access to music for children and young people. Beyond the thrill of performing at such an iconic venue, the initiative seeks to create lasting opportunities for young people across South Wales, united by their passion for music.
Representatives from Blessed Carlo Acutis commented: "This incredible opportunity has allowed our learners to embrace new challenges, rise to the occasion, and build lifelong friendships through their shared love of music. We are immensely proud of their hard work and the professionalism they have shown in reaching this remarkable moment.”
The Music for Youth Proms is a national celebration of young musicians from across the UK, held at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. Each night, over 1,500 performers showcase a vibrant mix of orchestral classics, folk, jazz, rock, and pop. Highlights include the world premiere of Aileen Sweeney’s Giant’s Causeway-inspired piece, part of the BBC Ten Pieces project, and a massed ensemble uniting young people through the power of music.
