CSC Press Release

Supported by Central South Consortium (CSC), the Pen Y Dre cluster began their journeys to strengthen reading within their schools. The decision, agreed by the Headteachers, was to prioritise developing a shared understanding of the ‘science of reading’.

To support their professional learning journey, the cluster selected ‘The Art and Science of Teaching Primary Reading’ by Christopher Such, as well as Dr Hollis Scarborough’s well established Reading Pope Model.

CSC designed a series of online Book Club sessions that brought together literacy leaders, headteachers and local authority colleagues. The sessions provided valuable space for rich, honest discussion and reflection.

Headteacher, Darren Thomas at Pantyscallog Primary School said “Being part of this book club has been invaluable for our staff. It has deepened their understanding of how children learn to read and supported the development of consistent, high-quality teaching across the school. We are already seeing the benefits in both staff confidence and pupil outcomes.”

The engagement has had a positive impact on staff, helping strengthen staff knowledge and practice, which is already beginning to have a positive impact on reading across the schools.

Well done to Dowlais Primary School, Gellifaelog Primary School, Goetre Primary School, Gwaunfarren Primary School, Pantyscallog Primary School and Ysgol y Graig Primary School for their commitment to strengthening reading.
