Listening and engagement sessions are taking place with parents, staff, governors and pupils about plans for a multi-million- pound new school to replace Goetre Primary in Gurnos, Merthyr Tydfil, which is currently in a poor state of repair.
The project will create a modern, state-of-the-art new build school, jointly funded by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and Welsh Government's Sustainable Communities for Learning programme.
The new school will be located less than half a mile away from the current site on land below Pen Y Dre High School. It will have a Multi-use Games Area (MUGA), community facilities, and a childcare setting.
All stakeholders are being asked what they would like the Council to consider when designing the new Goetre school and what community facilities they would like included on the site.
The following drop-in sessions are taking place to give parents and members of the community the opportunity to speak to officers about the project:
• Parent drop-in sessions at Goetre Primary School - Tuesday 22 November, 3-5pm and Wednesday 23 November, 3-5pm
• Community drop-in session at Calon Las Community Hub - Tuesday 29 November, 3-5pm
“The current environment for teaching and learning isn’t suitable for a 21st century curriculum, and many facilities are in need of being updated,” said Cabinet Member for Education Cllr Michelle Jones.
“The school buildings are not accessible for pupils, staff or visitors who are wheelchair users and is not compliant with the Equalities Act 2010. A modern state-of-the-art teaching and community facility is needed for the benefit of all the pupils who attend Goetre, their families and the wider Gurnos community.”
Further community engagement will take place before the plans are finalised over the coming months.
If you cannot attend a drop in session but would like to speak to officers about the project, please call the Council’s Contact Centre on 01685 725000, or email email@example.com and an officer will get back in touch with you.
