Town centre pedestrian safety work to begin in New Year

Work will begin in the New Year on work to make crossing the road in a section of the town centre safer for pedestrians.

Following a public consultation last summer, an ‘informal crossing’ at Victoria Street will become a zebra crossing with a much wider raised area for pedestrians.

The project is one of a series of walking and cycling improvement schemes being carried out by the Council as part of its Welsh Government-funded Active Travel programme.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Transformation and Commercialisation Cllr Geraint Thomas said: “We’re often asked what the term ‘active travel’ actually means.

“Encouraging people to make more journeys by walking and cycling is key in achieving the sustainability goals set out in Welsh Government’s Transport Strategy.

“To be able to build active travel into daily routines, we have to create infrastructure that makes cycling and walking a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone. And Welsh Government has given us the money to carry out this work.”

Increased active travel will lead to fewer journeys by car and also provide the following benefits:

• enhancing physical and mental wellbeing

• supporting economic prosperity

• improving the environment and biodiversity

• reducing congestion

• enhancing quality of life

Cllr Thomas added: “There will be a period of disruption for the duration of the works expected to last around three weeks, but we’ll do what we can to minimise the impact.”

Work currently taking place to create shared routes for pedestrians and cyclists running alongside Avenue de Clichy and the gyratory system, and alongside Bethesda Street will be paused over the Christmas period from December 17 and resume in the New Year.
