Trading Standards Wales (TSW) offers caution to consumers seeking to reduce their carbon emissions, energy and fuel bills.  From past experience, new incentives and a higher demand for services brings an increase in rogue traders.

An operation will see a range of events aimed at both targeting rogue traders and providing information and support to consumers, who are increasingly more vulnerable to scams due to the cost of living crisis.

TSW week will also see the launch of a Welsh toolkit to support the enforcement of legislation concerning Energy Performance Certificates.  Recent trials in one local authority have demonstrated that engagement with landlords to increase the energy rating of properties has resulted in a reduction in annual carbon emissions of 198.5 tonnes, a reduction in energy of 178.3 kwh and a reduction in fuel bills of over £58,000 (April 2022 prices).

TSW asks consumers applying for grants for energy efficiency schemes to ensure that they are providing their information through genuine channels – always ‘Take 5’ to consider social media advertisements and unsolicited calls or e-mails.  Be aware that contracts signed in the home or at distance should offer a cancellation period before work commences.

When searching for traders, ask friends and family for recommendations, rather than posting on social media sites.  Consumers who have bought ‘green’ heating or insulation recently are encouraged to share their experience via the Competition and Markets Agency Consumer protection in green heating and insulation sector: a call for information - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

TSW asks traders who may still be unsure of their legal responsibilities to contact their local authority, primary authority or trade body for assistance, or find advice at Home | Business Companion
