Update on Aberfan & Merthyr Vale Community Centre

In May the Council entered into an agreement with Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Trust to temporarily occupy and run services at Aberfan & Merthyr Vale Community Centre while work continues to find a permanent resolution. This agreement expires on 1^st August 2024.

We continue to attempt to work with the Trust and its insolvency practitioner to extend that arrangement so we can continue operating services at the centre.

We have engaged with our local Member of Parliament, Gerald Jones, and our local Senedd Member, Dawn Bowden, to get advice on a way forward with the Charity Commission to secure the long-term future of the centre.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Geraint Thomas, said: “The Council has, and will continue to, do everything in its power to maintain service provision at the centre, however, we need the cooperation of the Trustees and insolvency practitioner to allow us to do this at this time.”
