On Thursday, 23rd October, Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre hosted the highly anticipated Young Leaders launch event, an initiative that's all about nurturing the leadership skills of primary school students and inspiring them to become future sports leaders. The event, which ran from 9:30am to 2pm, was a huge success, with over 120 pupils from across the county coming together to learn, grow, and have fun.

The Young Leaders programme forms part of the newly revamped leadership pathway, developed by Active Merthyr Tydfil, MTCBC’s Sport Development department.  It aims to equip primary school students with the skills and knowledge required to support sport provision in their schools. With a focus on practical learning, the event featured guest speakers and interactive sessions designed to prepare the young leaders for their new roles.

Cllr Gareth Lewis, Cabinet Member for Education commented: "We're thrilled to see so many young people enthusiastic about taking on leadership roles and making a positive impact in their schools.

“The Young Leaders programme is a fantastic opportunity for these students to develop essential skills, build confidence, and get a taste of what it takes to be a leader in the sporting world. We're committed to supporting their journey and providing them with the tools they need to succeed."

The event was just the beginning of an exciting journey for these young leaders, with a range of activities and resources planned for the coming year. From termly visits and placements to visits to local organisations, the programme is designed to provide a comprehensive and supportive environment for the students to grow and develop.

The Young Leaders programme is a shining example of Merthyr Tydfil's commitment to empowering the next generation and providing opportunities for young people to thrive.

As Cllr Jamie Scriven, Cabinet Member for Economy, Regeneration, Leisure & Tourism added: "We're dedicated to helping these young leaders reach their full potential and become the sports leaders of tomorrow. We believe in them, and we're excited to see the incredible things they'll achieve."
