Young Leaders Shine at Successful Event in Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre

On Thursday 17 September, Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre welcomed more than 120 primary school pupils from across the county borough for the launch of the Young Leaders programme. The event provided aspiring young leaders with the opportunity to develop new skills, build confidence and discover how they can make a positive impact through sport in their schools.

The programme forms part of a leadership pathway developed by Active Merthyr Tydfil, MTCBC's Sport Development department. Designed to equip primary school pupils with the knowledge, skills and experience needed to support sports provision within their schools, the programme focuses on practical learning and personal development. Throughout the day, participants took part in interactive workshops and heard from guest speakers, helping them prepare for their new leadership roles and inspiring them to become the next generation of sports leaders.

Cllr Gareth Lewis, Cabinet Member for Education, said: "It’s fantastic to see so many young people eager to develop their leadership skills and have a positive influence in their school communities.

“The Young Leaders programme gives participants the chance to build confidence, learn important life skills, and explore what leadership in sport is all about. We’re committed to helping them reach their potential and supporting them every step of the way."

The event was just the beginning of an exciting journey for these young leaders, with a range of activities and resources planned for the coming year. From termly visits and placements to visits to local organisations, the programme is designed to provide a comprehensive and supportive environment for the students to grow and develop.

The Young Leaders programme is a shining example of Merthyr Tydfil's commitment to empowering the next generation and providing opportunities for young people to thrive.
