CCTV

CCTV plays a significant role in reducing crime and disorder, increasing community safety and public reassurance as well as assisting the Police in investigating crime.

The Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council Control Room monitors 70 CCTV cameras throughout the Borough.

Where are Cameras Based?

The majority of cameras are based in the Town Centre area including the High Street, Car Parks and Taff Trail, while the others cover local housing estates, schools and main hospital.

CCTV Operation

The CCTV operators work closely with South Wales Police (SWP), local businesses and other MTCBC departments, providing intelligence used in the detection and prevention of crime as well as re-active assistance during ongoing incidents.

Liaison between the Control Room and SWP is via the police airwave radio system. This allows for direct contact with operational Police Officers helping us to direct to, and inform officers at the scene of an incident. Police Officers based at the main town centre Police Station also have the ability to view live data via a direct link from the CCTV Control Room.

To date well over 2,700 incidents have been caught on the CCTV system at Merthyr Tydfil, and it has been instrumental in assisting Police bring many offenders to justice.
