Employment and Training Schemes for Disabled People

Within Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council we recognize and endorse the rights of every individual, regardless of any impairment or disability, to have equal rights, access and opportunity to be employed and access training in the same way as every other person in Merthyr Tydfil.

We do, however, acknowledge that some individuals, who have an impairment or disability, may benefit from additional support in the areas of employment and training and have developed the following projects to support these individuals.

Through Community Services Daytime Opportunities Programme for individuals who have a learning disability the following projects are available:

Merthyr Tydfil College

The Local Authority commissions a discrete provision for individuals with more complex learning disabilities, individuals can access this project for two years.

ASDAN

The Local Authority operates a two step ASDAN which aims to develop life and soft skills enabling individuals to work towards further independence.

Day Services

Operates a gardening scheme where individuals learn skills needed to step out into less dependent work based opportunities i.e Elite and MTIB.

For further information about the above services and how to access them, please contact our Duty Officer on 01685 724500.

Through Community Services Social Regeneration Services the following projects are available:

Family First Disability/Key Worker project

Whilst it is recognised that there are providers within the market that specialise in dealing with disability, the emphasis on this project is about encouraging disabled parents to integrate at an earliest possible stage in mainstream education, training and employment provision. The Key Worker role would be to liaise with specialist providers, social workers, and mainstream providers and support the adult in removing barriers that prevent them for participating.

Aim of the project:

Raise a higher degree of awareness of the benefits of continued learning and employment.

  • To establish at least 6 volunteering placements within community settings for parents with a disability.
  • At least 6 nationally recognised qualifications will be achieved by participating adults.
  • The key worker will support individuals participating in the project on a 1:1 basis, using person centred approaches; thus ensuring the opportunities offered to them meet their needs and wishes and are, therefore, more likely to succeed in the long term.
