What next?
Once the Elective Home Education (EHE) team is informed that a parent/carer has decided to home educate their child, a member of the team will make contact with you to discuss your plans and to offer support and guidance. This is usually in the form of a home visit. Prior to the visit you will be sent a questionnaire to complete which will then support the discussion and may help you plan out how you intend to meet the provision of education which is suitable for your child’s age, ability and aptitude. Your child will also be given a child-friendly questionnaire to complete. After the visit you will be given a full written report of what was discussed and of course, any advice and guidance given.
After the initial visit we offer further contact every six months, either in the form of a further visit or via email. We are always available to provide advice and support in between contact visits.
You are responsible for your child’s education, but Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council has a legal duty to ensure that the education they receive is suitable. Our Elective Home Education team offers advice and guidance to families who have opted to educate their children at home, including curriculum, basic skills, literacy and numeracy, methodology etc. This can include regular face-to-face or email contact enabling us to get to know our homeschool families and reach out with support if needed.
